The territory of Pompeii, bordering with the neighbouring towns of Boscoreale, Scafati, Torre Annunziata, Castellammare di Stabia and S. Maria la Carità, covers an area of about 1,192 hectares.

Located at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, 14 metres high above sea level on the southern side, Pompeii is a religious and tourist centre of worldwide interest due to the simultaneous presence of a vast and unique archaeological heritage and of the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary: the former is annually reached by millions of visitors fascinated by the unearthed city, while the latter is a destination for very large pilgrimages.

It became an autonomous municipality on 29th March 1928 with a population of about 7,000 at the time, in 1930 it obtained the concession of the civic coat of arms and the Municipal Gonfalone, with special RR. DD and recently with D.P.R. of 9.1.2004 was awarded the title of “City”.
