{"id":10876,"date":"2018-05-31T19:08:45","date_gmt":"2018-05-31T17:08:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.parconazionaledelvesuvio.it\/biodiversity\/anfibi-e-rettili\/"},"modified":"2025-09-01T10:21:32","modified_gmt":"2025-09-01T08:21:32","slug":"amphibians-and-reptiles","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.parconazionaledelvesuvio.it\/en\/biodiversity\/amphibians-and-reptiles\/","title":{"rendered":"Amphibians and reptiles"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"pl-10876\"  class=\"panel-layout\" ><div id=\"pg-10876-0\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-10876-0-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-10876-0-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"0\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>The herpetofauna that populates the Somma-Vesuvius volcanic complex is currently made of only two species of amphibians, the edible frog and the European green toad, and eight species of reptiles.<\/p>\n<p>Amphibians were represented in the past by other species that have now disappeared: the spectacled salamander (Salamandrina tergididata), whose controversial presence on the volcano has animated many zoological discussions, is noteworthy; it seems that it was discovered and described for the first time on the  Vesuvius in the early nineteenth century.<\/p>\n<p>The scarcity of wells and surface waters, in addition to the strong anthropization of the territory, are limiting factors for this class of vertebrates.<\/p>\n<p>The European green toad (Bufo viridis) is widespread on the eastern, northern and western sides of the volcanic complex; being protected by the \u201cHabitat\u201d Community Directive, this species presents emerald-green spots on the back and concentrates the reproductive effort in a few days in spring, exploiting the ephemeral puddles of the first spring rains.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pgc-10876-0-1\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-10876-0-1-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_pw_image_banner widget-image-banner panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"1\" >\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.parconazionaledelvesuvio.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/bio_anfibi_e_rettili-02.jpg\" target=\"_self\" class=\"image-banner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-fluid  image-banner__image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.parconazionaledelvesuvio.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/bio_anfibi_e_rettili-02.jpg\" alt=\"\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"image-banner__content  image-banner__content--normal\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"h3  image-banner__title\" style=\"color: #ffffff\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"image-banner__text\" style=\"color: #ffffff\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBrufo viridis \/ \u00a9 Nicola Maio\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/a>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-10876-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-has-style\" ><div class=\"siteorigin-panels-stretch panel-row-style panel-row-style-for-10876-1\" data-stretch-type=\"full\" ><div id=\"pgc-10876-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-10876-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\">Zamenis lineatus \/ \u00a9 Giuseppe Di Martino<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-10876-2\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-10876-2-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-10876-2-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child panel-last-child\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>Reptiles find ideal conditions for reproducing in the natural environments of the park, therefore the Vesuvius is a very important area for the conservation of these animals in Campania.<\/p>\n<p>The most widespread species of reptiles are the Italian wall lizard (Podarcis sicula), the Colubridae, harmless snakes, with the exception of the Vipera aspis.<\/p>\n<p>The most common snake is the Saettone occhirossi (Zamenis lineatus), while the most showy one is the very rare four-lined snake (Elaphe quatuorlineata). It\u2019s also worth mentioning the presence of the Aesculapian snake (Elaphe longissima).<\/p>\n<p>Two small sauria, the Tarentola mauritanica and the Mediterranean house gecko (Hemidactylus turcicus) are often found on walls and inside houses.
